Our living room is where our baby plays the most but I was dreading adding any furniture that might ruin our home aesthetic. We originally stored his toys in baskets, but it never would look neat and tidy even though we had cleaned up! So we set out to improve our living room toy situation.
In this post, we’re sharing the best toy storage solution for your living room and how we use the Ikea Trofast to contain the mess!

BEFORE: Using Baskets for Toy Storage
I am very mindful of the furniture that we bring into our home and I didn’t want to clutter up our living room with unnecessary items, especially large pieces of furniture.
That’s probably why I stuck to just using these Target baskets for our toy organization for over a year. We really do love these baskets and they are our favorite baskets in general, but because you could always see the contents of the baskets, the living room looked messy even though we had cleaned up!
Besides toys, other baby items we always have handy are clean bibs and muslin cloths, books, and a laundry hamper for dirty baby clothes. Not shown above are diapers and wipes that are hidden underneath our coffee table!
So, even more than toy storage, we desperately needed a place to hide ALL our baby things.
LIVING ROOM TOY STORAGE SOLUTION
While researching toy storage solutions, the search results on Amazon had a lot of toy organizers that were open and you could basically see everything inside the bins. That didn’t solve my problem, since the whole goal was to reduce visual clutter (AKA hide as much away as possible)!
I then searched on Ikea and came across the Ikea Trofast system, which seemed to be a decent option to try out. I figured if it didn’t work out well in the living room I could always put it in our baby’s nursery.
There are a lot of different sizes, colors, and configurations for the Ikea Trofast, but we ended up purchasing the white version with white bins.
I was already hesitant about adding any additional furniture to our living room not wanting to clutter it up, so I chose the white unit with white bins so that our eyes would not be drawn to it and it just kinda disappeared from the living room as much as possible.
Our Ikea Trofast unit was $76 and only took 45 minutes to assemble. The dimensions are 39″ x 17″ x 22″ which fits our living room nicely, creating a small designated play area for our baby.

How We Organize The Ikea Trofast
We decided to utilize 3 small bins on top and 3 large bins on the bottom. In the small bins, we store clean bibs, diapers/wipes, and smaller toys. In the large bins, we have a toy bin, book bin, and laundry hamper bin that replaced the previous baby hamper (which we really did like but this works even better to eliminate another item laying around the living room)!
As our baby got older, he started to gather more and more toys, and our living room started to get overwhelmed with too many toys. After implementing a toy rotation (with the rest of the toys stored in the nursery closet) the amount of toys became much more manageable and now is down to two bins that get swapped out every week.
We like that the bins are easy to slide in and out completely. Getting extra bins from Ikea also makes it super easy to swap in and out for the toy rotation!

Aesthetically Pleasing Baby Toys
We display larger toys on top of the Ikea Trofast unit, which happen to be Lovevery toys – the most pretty and aesthetically pleasing toys! We have loved being subscribed to Lovevery for the past year and are big fans of their developmentally appropriate toys that get delivered straight to us every 2-3 months.
